Connect To Remote Machine Via SSH Using Windows, Mac Or Linux

I needed to connect to my hosting service via SSH today, it was problematic but eventually I got hold of it. Here is how you can do it. There are different ways to do it on Windows system  and on Unix based or Mac systems. But before that, SSH access must be enabled on remote machine. If you are trying to connect to a hosting server, SSH access by default would be disabled and you may have to request them to enable it first.

Once, you’re sure that SSH access is enabled, Follow the below mentioned steps to connect to your remote machine via SSH.

Windows

To access SSH:

  1. Download PuTTY and install it. You can also use WinSCP if you hate command line tools.
  2. Open PuTTY and enter your IP address or host name, Port as 22 and select connection type as SSH.PuTTY SSH Settings
  3. Login with your remote machine user name and password. If you are connecting to a hosting server, your username and password would be the same as of your hosting management panel like cPanel.
  4. Click Open to start the SSH session.
  5. If this is your first time connecting to the server from this computer, you will see the following output. Accept the connection by clicking Yes.
    PuTTY Alert
  6. If everything goes fine, your SSH connection will open and you will see a terminal prompt asking for your username and password.
  7. Enter your username or primary domain name, like example.com, if you are connecting to a hosting service. Hit enter and provide your password. You are all done now and connected to your remote machine via SSH. Once you’re connected, you may see a similar message to this one and a prompt. You can now type in different commands.
